Hi Tom, I'm glad that you have taken the time to be "both creative and take care of business.”

That's the key, right? To take the time! May be we all learn from your example!

Beth,
about " I love getting sparked with ideas and connections and communications between people. Those activities are so fluid, creative, remarkable, genuine, fun."

I'm with you about this.

Over the years, I have had to study so much about business so that I have been able to publish books, produce and direct feature films, give speeches, teach graduate students and so many other things.

One thing that keeps me going when "business" seems to fill so much of my days -- I take time *every day* to do nourishing, creative work.

I will write fiction one page a day (at least).
I'll write my upcoming spiritual book one page a day (at least).

In this way, I'm both creative and I'm also "taking care of business."

many happy moments,
Tom

Dakota, Your post isn't too long. There's no right length for a comment to a post. And welcome to blogging! Your organic metaphors really hits home with me. I'm sure that you having an active dialogue with all your parts, and are having the time of your life! I look forward to connecting with you offline, and appreciate so much that you stepped into the blogging world to communicate with me, and us, here.

Wow! I was just thinking about this very issue this evening and then I friended you on FB and found your blog with this post. This is a rich topic. I am thinking success in anything but especially in the arts requires a balance sorely missing in this all or nothing, yes or no world we live in.
Starting my own book this year is kind of like having a baby all on my own. I have to be the mama and the papa too. I need to indulge my receptive, imaginative butterfly self to tap into the winds of creation and ride, ride ride them till I have a piece of story. Then I have to get out my hammer and saw and fit this piece into the house I'm building. I also have to apply a hammer and saw or whatever it takes to my life to make sure the pieces fit together so the bread keeps coming in. I'm the creator and the protector of the creative space. At first it seemed like a juggling act but it's coming together and seeming more like and organic, symbiotic relationship. The image I'm holding is a nice sturdy oak tree and a flowering vine.
I'm new to bogging (although I'll be starting my own soon) and hope this post isn't too long.
Bless~
