In my experience, art is part Vision, and part series-of-providential-mistakes-and-events. Most of my creations turned out different than planned, and usually better. We always do better when willing to flow with the creative process, and let the piece reveal itself to us and to the world.

Is Art our means of self-expression, or are we Art's?

Yes! beth. I think there's a big opportunity is in approaching first-draft
writing as "play" — have fun with the process, and go along for the ride.
perhaps plan on taking a few unusual risks following new directions.

let go of the responsibility to "know" everything. try to: explore, listen,
and follow your partners — i.e. the setting & circumstances, characters,
your own subconscious, wherever else inexplicable else ideas and
voices and sweet lines come from...

writing, as all creative acts, is part conscious, part sub(un) conscious.
play & improv helps us tap into what we don't know we DO know.
